ORGANISATIONS INVOLVED

what is being done to solve this issue?

MOMS DEMAND ACTION

Moms Demand Action (MDA) was created by a stay-at-home mom after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Since its creation in 2012, its membership has increased to 1.5 million

They stand for renewed, stronger gun laws and policies to protect children. After shootings like Columbine and Newtown, no laws were changes to prevent access to guns. MDA organise lobbies and marches to show they are against gun violence. Some campaigns running at the moment are: ‘Tell Congress They’ve Broken Our Hearts’, a valentine’s day campaign that encouraged members to write to congress about gun control, and #EndFacebookGunShows, a campaign against the sale of firearms over social media websites.

ENDING SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

Ending School Shootings was set up by Dr Johnathan Doll and his wife Laura. Doll devoted his life’s work to understanding the psychology of child killers. He created two main prevention techniques of school shootings. The REACH-IN technique teaches people to look out for two causes, bullying and revenge. It also encourages to schools to pay attention to their students and understand them. REACH-OUT encourages the government to create an anti-school shooting plan and develop advocacy-based approaches.

AMERICAN HUMANE   ASSOCIATION

The American Humane Association says emotional neglect is ignoring, rejecting, verbally assaulting, isolating and exploiting. The killers were not subject to all this abuse, but they did experience some. The AHA has a prevention initiative for neglect called the Front Porch Project. It is a national, research-supported, community-based programme. The programme helps people who are concerned about the safety and well-being of children in their communities, and teaches them to make a difference.
