The attack left families without children, and survivors like Anne-Marie Hochhalter and Richard Castaldo paralyzed. This meant they were unable to live a normal life. Craig Scott, who was held hostage in the library and whose sister, Rachel, said that his anger after shooting damaged his family. Considerable media attention also meant that families could not grieve properly.

There have been 74 known copycat cases. Charles Andrew Williams, who shot up his school in California, told his friends he was going to ‘pull a Columbine’. Seung-Hui Cho, who carried out a massacre at the Virginia Tech University, said he was inspired by Columbine and saw Harris and Klebold as martyrs. A fandom for Harris and Klebold has grown on social media sites, particularly tumblr. The fans call themselves ‘Columbiners’ and they glorify the massacre.
